The PEAK photo book is an attempt to explore the phenomenon of time through the medium of photography. To do so, the book uses images that partially succeed in preventing or at least disrupting the temporal placement of the scenes they depict.
Mountain peaks, perhaps among the least colonised corners of the earth, are remote places that are often negligibly affected by the weather, the time of day or the seasons. Because of their geographic exposure, they are largely devoid of human presence, which also makes it difficult to decode the images taken of them. During the process of perception, the recipient is left with very little reference for the temporal positioning of the scenes.
The images in the book are taken from webcams installed and used daily by ski tourism centres, archiving their images on an hourly basis. The resulting composites of roughly half a thousand source images each are supplemented by image fragments that create a kind of artificial night sky by displaying the skies in negative versions as the reader flips through the book. By holding the pages of the book at the right angle, one can see the mountain peaks under both day and night skies, further complicating the temporal positioning of the images.
